We shot in one location that had a lot of visual variety. Each of the 3 ladies had 3 different vibes for their background that was in alignment for their brand. Lindy said she loved plants so we welcomed the greenery in for her shots!

Confession… I also love taking photos of people not smiling. Solemn moments have so much depth. Vee has been a warrior and thriver since her late 30’s. She is the epitome of perseverance, miracles and bad-assery.

Oh, how I love some walking photos! My recipe for walking:  1. Walk slow, like super slow 2. Walk with one foot in front of the other 3. Smile looking left, right and in camera.  Hand in pocket for that extra dose of wow. We did this shot in one take… Vee killed it!

I can usually depend on natural Arizona light to be in my favor when I need it. But this day was the solar eclipse! When we walked in I was surprised how much darker I imagined it. Thankfully we powered through it and got some lovely images.

Group posing tip: Stagger heights and get angles in where ever you can with arms and legs, this creates more dimension and interest. These ladies were naturals!

During this Mother's Blessing Ceremony we all lit small candles from the Mama-To-Be's large candle. This is a symbol of unity and support from her dear friends. We will re-light our candles when she is in labor to keep her in our thoughts and to send her well wishes and love as she births her baby.​​​​​​​​

The idea of a Mother's Blessing Ceremony is to celebrate the mama-to-be as an individual and honor her right of passage into motherhood. Unlike a traditional baby shower, which focuses on gifts for the baby, a mother's blessing centers on nurturing the mother-to-be emotionally, spiritually, and mentally for the journey ahead. Mother's Blessings typically involves rituals, blessings, affirmations, and activities designed to celebrate the mother's strength, wisdom, and transition into motherhood. It is common to want a group photo at a special event. Since this intimate gathering was extra special, I asked her dear friends to each put a hand on the mama-to-be to for her to feel the love and support of her community. Photography tip: Sometimes it's okay for your subject to be out of focus! Since the focus is on the candle it lent to a pretty cool effect for our mama to be in the background. This candle is an important focus to the ceremony as she will light it during labor and symbolically bring in the love and support from her dear friends that came together to celebrate her on this day.​​​​​​​​

Photo Tip: When taking photos don't be afraid to try unconventional compositions. Everyone doesn't have to be centered and fully in the frame. This can allow the focus to go to the main subject, which in this case is the tying of the yarn bracelet activity. ​​​​​​​​

The yarn bracelet tradition is one of my favorites for Mother's Blessings. A ball of yarn is passed around the circle and wrapped around everyone's left wrist. After the circle is complete we cut the yarn and tie a bracelet. The bracelet is a symbol of support for the mama and a reminder to keep her in our thoughts and hold her with love. We will keep the bracelet on until the baby arrives.​​​​​​​​
